Sure skills are important. But this is just a tool to get the job done. Rule of third, foreground, background… It helps a lot and surely you will make better pictures if you follow the rules.
On the other side, your pics will look all the same. And finally, at the end of the day, what count is if you and your viewers like the shot or not. How it has been done only interests a few guys who also have a camera.
So yes, sometimes, I just measure the light and like a hunter, I shoot.

The one below shows a woman postioned right in the center. Something you shoul do according the rule of third. But, if you consider her head as a landscape, you will chose something out of it to compose your picture
In this case, her eyes, both placed to the intersections ofnthe third’s lines. I was amused in the postprod when I noticed it.
So here is my tip : know the rules, practice, and forgett them!
